About Us

One of Chicago’s largest and longest-operating food pantries, Lakeview Pantry’s mission is to eliminate hunger and poverty in our community by providing food to fill the basic need of hungry people; increasing the independence of our clients through self-help initiatives and other innovative programs; and raising awareness of hunger and poverty and working towards solutions to eliminate them.

Our vision is to be a stable presence in the communities we serve, and to be a model of compassionate, effective, and collaborative service delivery by building upon our Food Distribution excellence, achieving Client Services excellence, and building capacity and strengthening our ability to carry out our mission.

Our ultimate goal is the eradication of hunger and poverty in our communities.

  • Our Work

    For 48 years, Lakeview Pantry has provided a nutritious variety of groceries and essential social services to our neighbors on the Northside who struggle with food insecurity.

    Who We Serve:

    • Nearly 1 in 9 individuals on the North Side are struggling with poverty and food insecurity
      • That’s 8.6% of the Lakeview population
    • 30% of Lakeview Pantry clients are underemployed, 46% are disabled and/or retired
    • 45% of Lakeview Pantry clients have at least one child under the age of 18
    • 3% of Lakeview Pantry clients are homeless

    How We Work:

    • Nutritious food using a choice-based distribution model
      • Monthly Food Distribution at Lakeview Pantry Sheridan location: Monday, Wednesday, Friday,  Noon – 4 p.m. and Thursday from 4 – 7 p.m.
      • Weekly Produce Pick-up at Lakeview Pantry Sheridan location: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 2 – 4 p.m. and Thursday from 4 – 7 p.m.
      • Monthly and Weekly Food Distribution at Lakeview Pantry Oakdale location: Tuesday, Thursday, 6 – 8 p.m. & Saturday, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
    • Home delivery services for elderly, disabled, and home-bound clients
      • Home Delivery takes place on Saturdays (excluding holiday weekends)
    • Personal hygiene products (+ toys and coats during holidays)
    • Social services: case management, mental health counseling, referrals and application assistance (SNAP, healthcare, government forms, etc.)
  • Our History

    Opened in 1970, we originated from the efforts of a few dedicated neighbors who wanted to help people in their community who were struggling to secure the food they needed. Since that time we have grown into an organization that provides more than 1.6 million pounds of food to our neighbors each year. View our timeline below.
