Brennan O’Connell-Miller and Katherine Young win AFP Chicago’s Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award!
On May 5, 2017, The Association of Fundraising Professionals of Chicago presented the 41st Annual Faces of Philanthropy Awards to honor the year’s most distinguished leaders of the Chicago’s philanthropic and nonprofit sectors. Lakeview Pantry volunteers, Brennan O’Connell-Miller and Katherine Young, were awarded with the Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award.
Brennan and Kat have both shown incredible graciousness and maturity as they have dedicated a significant amount of energy to philanthropic endeavors, specifically for the benefit of their favorite charity – Lakeview Pantry. Over the summer Lakeview Pantry opened its new home at 3945 N. Sheridan Road and held a grand opening celebration in late June. The celebration was attended by almost 300 members of the Northside community including local government officials and community leaders. During the celebration, Brennan and Kat took it upon themselves to host a lemonade stand in front of the building with proceeds directly benefiting Lakeview Pantry and its programs. The girls recruited a group of their young friends and together, brought in over $1,000 for our organization. That was more than $800 over the initial goal the girls set for themselves! It wasn’t just the lemonade sales that drew community members to their stand (and eventually through our doors), it was the girls’ enthusiasm for Lakeview Pantry that stopped even the gruffest pedestrians and made them smile. They sold a lot of lemonade that day, but more importantly, they told the story of Lakeview Pantry, our move to a bigger home, and what that meant to the community and our neighbors in need. They taught members of the community about what it means to be hungry and that 1 in 9 people in the neighborhood don’t know where to find their next meal. They informed people about the Pantry and how it works. The girls brought in over $1,000 in proceeds that day and in the process they brought in hundreds of new donors and volunteers, and even new clients! .
