For Sarah, Lakeview Pantry is “Everything”

Lakeview Pantry’s 950+ regular volunteers are known for their hospitality. Anyone who walks through our doors on a distribution day can see that our volunteers strive to create a warm and friendly space for the clients they serve.

But for long-time Broadway location volunteer Sarah Pearson, making clients feel welcome isn’t just a part of her volunteer duties. With her trademark paper fan and big smile, making others feel at home is a part of who she is.

“I’ve got to have an audience,” Sarah shares with a grin. “I seem to have a gift for running my mouth and making people laugh.”
In the four years she’s been volunteering, Sarah has done nearly every volunteer duty there is. But, she says, working behind the counter is by far her favorite.

“It’s good for the soul,” she says. “I’ve always been a caretaker. When I was growing up I was shy. I just told myself I’m going to enjoy life.”

Sarah is never without a smile, joke or nickname for volunteers, staff and clients alike. In fact, some clients enjoy Sarah so much, they’ll often extend their wait just to be served by her.

“The feeling that I get is better than anything – better than gold, better than silver, better than diamonds,” she shares.

Sarah’s love of life is clear to everyone who meets her. But it’s not the only thing fueling her passion for making Lakeview Pantry a warm and inviting place for those in need.

“I’ve been homeless and hungry before,” she says. “It’s like you don’t have a face. People don’t talk to you. You feel lonely. So I give everyone special attention.”

And that special attention is just as rewarding for Sarah as it is for those she works with.

“Volunteering at the pantry is the best thing I’ve ever done,” she says. “This is my everything.”
